SPRINGFIELD, MO (KTVI)-- Cardinals’ ace Chris Carpenter is back on the mound.
In spring training nearly everyone thought his career was over, but Monday night Carpenter took the next step in a possible return to the big leagues.

Carpenter made the start for the AA Cardinals.

The fans loved it -- a giant crowd, about double the average of 4600. Carpenter loved it, too, for the most part.

Carpenter struck out the first two batters he faced and pitched 2 score-less innings before running into trouble in the third when he surrendered a double and a two run homer. He left after throwing 54 pitches -- he was on a limit of 60 -- but never got there, leaving to a standing ovation with 2 outs in the third.
