ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – A Franciscan Friar within the Catholic Archdiocese of St. Louis was badly beaten not far from the church where he spreads the message of love and peace, over $1. The Serra Club of St. Louis posted a prayer request on social media for Friar Ed Mundwiller of St. Anthony Padua Church in south St. Louis.
According to the post, Friar Ed was attacked at 3:30 p.m. Thursday as he was walking in the area of Osage and Minnesota Avenue, not far from where he lives. Police say that a suspect asked Friar Ed of St. Anthony’s for a dollar Thursday afternoon. When Friar Ed said that he didn’t have any a dollar, the suspect severely beat him then fled away along Minnesota.
The suspect is described as a black man, 18 to 22 years old, wearing a surgical mask and black hooded sweatshirt with the hood tight around his head.
Friar Ed’s family confirmed the incident with Fox 2. According to his family, the suspect beat Ed until his eyes were swollen shut and his leg was broken. He was treated at a local hospital and will need follow-up surgery for the broken leg.
Hearing of the attack sent Cassandra Logan’s stomach into knots. Logan said Friar Ed has shown her so much kindness since she opened her children’s clothing store across the street from St. Anthony’s. She’s praying for Friar Ed and the suspect or suspects.
“I don’t know if they caught the individual or individuals but they may have gotten away from us but in the eyes of God, they got to answer to that, and that’s a great price to answer to because he’s a man of cloth,” said Cassandra Logan.
The Catholic Archdiocese of St. Louis said Ed was not wearing his cloak at the time of the attack, He was in civilian clothes.
