ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – A 29-year-old St. Louis man was charged in connection with the shooting death of a 34-year-old in the Academy / Sherman Park neighborhood, one of seven murders that occurred over a 24-hour period in mid-January.

The murder occurred just after 7 p.m. Wednesday in the 5000 block of Cates Avenue. The victim, identified as Leon Rivers, was shot as he was running from an apartment. When first responders arrived, Rivers was rushed to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Ramon Demery, was taken into custody near 13th and Chouteau. He was armed with a pearl-handled, silver revolver, which police suspect was used in the shooting.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Demery with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, exhibiting a weapon, and carrying a concealed weapon. He remains jailed on $500,000 cash-only bond.

Demery has previous convictions in the state of California for carrying a concealed weapon (2007), marijuana possession (2010), and being a felon in possession of a firearm (2011).
