Attempted murder charges were filed Tuesday in the weekend shooting of an East St. Louis police officer.
Cortez Gillum, 36, is in custody on a$1.5 million bond. He`s accused of shooting officer Michael Baxton, Jr. in the face.
Baxton was released from the hospital Tuesday and is recovering.
Prosecutors say Baxton had received information from US Marshals that Gillum was in East St. Louis. Marshals were looking for him because he had walked away from a federal halfway house in January.
Prosecutors say when Baxton saw Gillum and approached him, they got into a brief scuffle then Baxton was shot.
