ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – Are you as chess player? The strongest chess tournament in history gets underway Wednesday at the Chess Club of St. Louis.
Six of the world’s top nine grandmasters will compete for the 2014 Sinquefield Cup. The who’s who of the chess world will play including World Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway and the U.S. champ Hikaru Nakamura. The Sinquefield Cup is named for St. Louis businessman and philanthropist Rex Sinquefield, who donated money to create the chess club as well as the tournament.
The champion will win $100,000 which is part of the $315,000 prize money and that is double the amount of last year’s pool.
The number three grandmaster in the world, Fabiano Caruana from Italy, says there will be no room for error in this tournament.
The first matches start at 2 pm. The public is invited to watch in person at the chess club in the Central West End or online at uschesschamps.com. The chess club expects fans from more than 175 countries will watch the tournament online.
