ST. LOUIS – St. Louis police responded to another case of a child being shot late Tuesday afternoon at a south city apartment complex.

The shooting took place around 6:40 p.m. in the 4200 block of Nebraska Avenue, located in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood.

The shooting was on the second floor of an apartment building. Police were on the scene for more than two and a half hours before clearing the area.

Investigators said the shooting appears to be accidental. The circumstances surrounding how the shooting happened are still unclear.

However, police said the 6-year-old was shot in the back and their injuries appear to be non-life threatening. The child was said to be in stable condition.

Neighbors saw a first responder carrying the child out of the home; part of the child was wrapped in bandages.

Neighbors also spoke about an emotional scene with a loved one of the child, possibly a grandmother.

“She was on her knees and her hands praying to God…and that it was her grandchild. I realized at that time that a child had been injured,” said neighbor Danna Ellis.

Police said homicide detectives were called in initially but the case is now being handled at the district level. That is an indication the case does not involve a fatality.

Investigators left the scene without speaking on camera. Fox 2 reached out for more details and are waiting to hear back from police.
