CLARKSVILLE, MO (KTVI) - The people of Clarksville Missouri are bracing for the crest of the flooding Mississippi which is predicted to happen Tuesday.  The town celebrates its 200th birthday in 2017, Tuesday could bring the 5th worst flood on record.

Clarksville Mayor Jo Anne Smiley said, “The economic impact of a flood is tremendous on the community.” Rising waters are keeping summer time tourists away from shops and antique stores in the community.

A flooding Mississippi is no surprise to long-time residents. And now some folks are being proactive like members of the Christian Church which built a concrete wall around it for protection.  Mayor Smiley said, “…and understanding further that the city or somebody else can’t take care of them that it’s going to take some of their help too.”

Clarksville no longer has the money to help everyone when the waters rise so volunteers step in, like people from Americorps. Kelly Kaufmann is a volunteer, “Seeing all the people from around here, see how much they appreciate it, it’s been great made it all worth it.”

Jody Antone is from Canada; he’s vacationing in Missouri and decided to pitch in.  Antone said, “Compassion, come out and help out the local town.”

The mayor said BNSF railroad has been generous donating tons of sand on several occasions to fill sandbags. The mayor added, “When flood times come people are here to help.”

Ron Egan lives in Clarksville but on higher ground, still he’s volunteering, “For me it’s just a responsibility for living here something you just need to do that we all need to do we live here and we help.”

The mayor said they can always use more volunteers until the danger passes and they are sure the sandbag wall will hold.
