ST. LOUIS, MO. (KTVI) - Plans for kitchen and bath improvements create more grief than joy for a St. Charles County family.  The couple called Contact 2 for help.  Here`s Bonita Cornute with their story

Things started on a good note but quickly changed.

A large down payment was made.  But the project never got off the ground.

The homeowners tell contact 2 they paid over eleven thousand dollars for a custom design makeover. That was in December 2011.  But the contractor never showed up to do the work.

Which at that point my wife and I lost all confidence in their ability to do the work.

So they asked for a full refund.  They got four thousand dollars back.  But six months later they were still waiting for the remaining sixty seven hundred dollars.

They were looking for a reasonably priced cabinet and counter.  Searching the web gave them images like these.   They thought the local business would give them a better deal.

Unfortunately we didn`t do as much due diligence that we should have done, my trusting nature that people do what they say they`ll do, just didn`t come to fruition.

After i talked to the folks at cabinets & interiors, they apologized for the delay and the couple received a check for the remainder of their down payment.

I felt that he was putting me off.  He was just giving excuses.  He had no intention of paying that money back.  That`s what I felt.  And I was frankly offended by it.

And there's a lesson for others looking for kitchen and bath remodeling.

First of all don`t rely on your trust and instincts.   You can be fooled.

If they give you names of people they`ve done work for, call them, maybe even visit a job site.

I'll repeat what the Better Business Bureau says is a good rule of thumb.  Pay in thirds, a third down, a third midway through the project and third upon completion.  And research the business before paying anything.   Call us if you have a consumer issue.  Volunteers take calls Monday through Thursday, between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm.  The number is 800-782-2222.
