ST. LOUIS, MO. (KTVI) – The spring hail storm may be long gone, but some homeowners are still wrestling with repairs.   Every insurance company is not the same when it comes to replacing siding.   James Jamison of Maryland Heights filed a claim with his insurance company after hail stones battered his house.   The roof’s been repaired but Jamison says he’s not sure about siding.

Its color matching.  They only pay for just the damage that was done to the siding.    And If the man I have replacing it can`t match it, then I don`t know what to do.

He’ll have to pay the difference out of pocket if he wants to replace the 25 year old siding on the entire house.  Matt Barton, a spokesperson for the Missouri Department of Insurance says that’s very possible.

Most insurance policies today specify they only cover parts of the house that are physically damaged.

Jamison says the area above his car port would be new but under the roof he’s be looking at the old siding.   He thinks it will be very noticeable at the rear of the house.

That corner piece is damaged.  It`s got a hole in it and they`ve got to take everything off anyway just to replace that corner piece.

Matt Barton says things changed back a decade ago.   “This really began about ten years ago when a massive hail storm hit the St. Louis region.  Insurance companies are regularly changing their policies and adjusting their procedures.”

It could cost Jamison $2000 to complete the entire house.  Some of his neighbors have avoided this expense.

“I’ve asked other people in the area and for six dollars a year, they add that coverage.   So in case it happens they are covered.” James Jamison.

If you have questions about your policy and what it covers, you should check into that while there’s no threat of fire or natural disaster.   You may be able to increase your coverage for a few dollars extra.  And the folks at your Department of Insurance in Missouri and Illinois can help you.  You`ll find links to those agencies below.   Call us if you have a consumer issue.  Volunteers take calls Monday through Thursday between 11am and 1pm.  It`s a toll free number…800 782-2222.
