EAST ST. LOUIS, IL (AP) – Investigators say a man whose body was found in the trunk of a burning car in East St. Louis had been shot twice and died from the wounds.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone said Tuesday the man didn’t die from the fire and had two gunshot wounds to the abdomen. Stone says either shot would have been fatal.

Investigators are working to identify the man. They say no one had reported a missing man fitting the victim’s description as of Tuesday.

Sgt. Scott Workman of the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis said the Buick found burning Monday afternoon was registered in Missouri and had multiple owners. He says the body was badly burned but investigators don’t know how long the car had been burning.
