ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - The St. Louis Fire Department responded to a call for a house explosion Wednesday morning in Baden.

It happened around 8:30 a.m. at a vacant home in the 8600 block of Oriole Street, south of the Halls Ferry Circle.

The Collapse Rescue Task Force used technology to determine there were no people trapped in the debris of the destroyed house.

Neighboring homes were evacuated.

Laclede Gas officials are investigating the cause of the explosion and checking the natural gas levels in the area. The adjacent homes were damaged by the blast. No one was injured.

According to St. Louis Fire Captain Garon Mosby, the department was unable to cut off the gas at the curb. Instead, they had to sift through the debris to locate the gas meter to disconnect the gas to the destroyed home and the adjacent properties.

Neighbors who live in the surrounding blocks around the explosion said they heard and felt the blast.

"Homes just don't explode," said Mosby.

He urges people to call police if they see suspicious activity in their area. "If you see something, say something."
