GRANITE CITY, IL (KTVI)- The second of three explosions needed to bring down the former Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge in Madison County, IL, took place Tuesday morning. IDOT crews shut down I-270 between Riverview Boulevard in north St. Louis and Route 3 in Granite City at 10am to allow for the explosion.
Tuesday morning’s explosion was to bring down the old westbound span, but a section of the truss bridge did not detonate as planned. Another blast is required and is scheduled for Wednesday, February 4. Crews will close the highway to traffic starting at 9:45am. Westbound traffic will be re-routed to Illinois 3 and eastbound traffic will be guided onto Riverview Blvd. Lanes should reopen within two hours.

Tuesday’s blast also caused minor damage to part of the eastbound side of the new canal bridge. IDOT says the damage did not weaken the structural integrity of the new bridge. One eastbound lane remained closed while engineers investigated. IDOT reopened the lane by the evening commute.
An additional explosion will take place in the near future will bring down the rest of the old bridge.
The new Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge opened late in 2014.
