DOJ launches hate crime investigation into Charleston church shooting


The Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church is the oldest AME church in the South. Nine people died in a hate crime shooting on June 17, 2015.

CHARLESTON, SC — The Department of Justice is opening a hate crime investigation into the shooting that took place at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, a DOJ spokesperson said Thursday.

The investigation will run parallel to the state investigation and will coordinate with the FBI.


The Charleston County Coroner’s Office identified all nine victims of shooting. We have posted them below.
