GODFREY, IL (KTVI) - It's a miraculous outcome for a Godfrey Illinois family after a child is rescued from the bottom of a pool. When the 911 call came into the Madison County Sheriff`s Department the odds were against the little girl.
"I spoke with the parents today and the child has made a 100% recovery and should be fine." said Capt. Will Dimitroff of the Madison County Sheriff`s Department.
It`s a miraculous ending to a weekend emergency. A family in a Godfery neighborhood called 911 Sunday afternoon after their 3-year-old daughter was discovered at the bottom of their in-ground pool. They had no idea how long she was underwater.
"What we had determined was that after the child was removed from the pool there were no signs of life that the child displayed." said Capt. Will Dimitroff.
A family friend began CPR.
"The child had water coming from its lungs. The following breaths provided the oxygen to the child." said Capt. Will Dimitroff.
Those quick actions likely saved the child's life. It`s an outcome investigators rarely see.
"The person on scene really took charge and removed the child from people who didn`t know what they were doing and started CPR and did in fact save the child`s life." said Capt. Will Dimitroff.
The family turned down our invitation to talk on camera but say their pool is surrounded by a fence. It`s a reminder it only takes a split second for a child to find water.
"I think parents should use this as a reminder that when you have an open body of water like that. That you need to have constant eyes on your child at all times because it only takes a matter of seconds before this can become a near tragedy." said Capt. Will Dimitroff
The sheriff's department says there was no evidence of parent neglect. They add that knowing CPR can truly be a life saving skill.
