SARASOTA, FL (CNN) -The Baltimore Orioles are not the only birds calling Ed Smith Stadium home. Until Friday, a pair of bald eagles was nesting in the left field lights despite barriers to keep them out.
Stadium officials noticed the nest last week high above the Orioles spring training facility. But that spot could be dangerous for baby birds. When birds nest in a tree, the babies will jump from branch to branch. If they were to do that in the lights surrounded by netting they could get entangled and be killed.
So crews removed the nest Friday while the eagles watched.
The eagles had been nesting atop a nearby cell phone tower for the past few years. But the nest was mysteriously destroyed back in September. The culprit could face federal fines.
Wildlife officials hope the birds will build another nest back on the cell phone tower.
