CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP) _ Eastern Illinois University has announced the layoff of 198 civil service employees, blaming the move on the continuing state budget impasse.

In addition to the layoffs, other Eastern Illinois workers, beginning in March, will be required to take one day of furlough per week until further notice, or June 30.

EIU President David Glassman made the announcement Monday in a letter to the university’s staff and students. He said those to be laid off will be notified later this week. Glassman said if the university begins receiving state funds by the layoff date of March 12, the layoffs will be rescinded.

Eastern Illinois and other public universities in the state haven’t received state funding since last summer because of the budget impasse between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Democrat-controlled General Assembly.
