Eighth-grade football phenom shot to death at party in Venice, a second teen injured

VENICE, Ill. –Illinois State Police are investigating a homicide that happened at approximately 11:40 p.m. in the 600 block of 3rd Street in Venice, Illinois on Saturday, May 4th.

Police say that shots were fired at a large party Saturday night and two teens were hit by this gunfire.

One of the victims was 14-year-old Jaylon McKenzie of Belleville. He was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries a short time after arriving.

The other victim was a 15-year-old female. She is currently in critical condition due to her injuries sustained during this shooting.

McKenzie was an eighth-grader at Central Junior High in Belleville and was recently featured in Sports Illustrated as one of their top six teen athletes in the country.

East St. Louis School District released a statement Sunday morning stating that they will provide crisis teams at their schools in the upcoming days.
