VELDA CITY, MO (KTVI) – Fox 2 received an exclusive look at the weapons and equipment inside two north St. Louis County police departments. This comes after a report from the organization Better Together revealed that many departments in the county are having trouble providing equipment for officers.

The Hillsdale and Velda City police departments showed our cameras stockpiles of guns, bullets, and other police equipment.

“We provide all of this for our officers,” Hillsdale Police Chief Herb Simmons said. “All to make sure they have what they need.”

Velda City Chief David Palino also said that his officers “have everything they need.”

“From the report people get the wrong idea,” he said.

Better Together requested information from all 60 police departments in the region for the report.

Some departments provided a grocery list of equipment. Some departments, like Hillsdale and Velda City, provided few details.

Chiefs Simmons and Palino believe the Better Together report unfairly criticizes small police departments. They also said they think it is all part of a larger push to merge the St. Louis City with the county and dissolve small police departments.

Better Together said the report is just a collection of information and does not include any specific recommendations.
