EAST ST. LOUIS, IL. (KTVI) – For the third time in two weeks a violent crash takes the life of an innocent victim in East St. Louis.
Surveillance video from a tire shop showed one victim being struck and killed in September. That was near 25th and Louisiana. Police used the video to help track down the driver.
Then Tuesday an innocent victim was killed when a suspect took off in a police cruiser and crashed.
Now police say another victim was run over on Wednesday night. They say the adult male was crossing the street near 25th and Argonne about 100 feet away from the intersection.
"We're not understanding the increased activity with these vehicle accidents," said Assistant Police Chief Ron Ike.
Ike praised Officer Keith Randolph for tracking down a white Grand Cherokee about 4 blocks from the scene of Wednesday night's crash. Police believe that vehicle struck the victim. Officer Randolph then tracked down one of the passengers.
"From talking to the passenger and some witnesses in the area later on, we were able to take the driver into custody," said Ike.
It's possible the driver never saw the victim. The crash was approximately 8:30pm and it was dark.
One witness has told police the driver got out to check on the victim but then took off.
Felicia Bevely was driving through East St. Louis on Thursday and hopes drivers will slow down.
"If we could just take our time and pay attention around us it would help a lot of people."
