MIDTOWN ST. LOUIS (KTVI)-On Saturday morning, Saint Louis University President Lawrence Biondi, S.J., told the University’s Board of Trustees that he intends to retire from his position. Father Biondi then announced his intentions to a large crowd of alumni, supporters and community leaders at a gala celebrating his 25 years of leadership at Chaifetz Arena Saturday night.

In a statement released Saturday night by SLU, Biondi said in part, “Just as I helped lead SLU’s transformation when I arrived here more than 25 years ago, I know it is now time for the next transformation to begin.”

The search for a new president will begin in the fall. Biondi will assist in that process.

Father Biondi also stated: “As I approach my 75th birthday, I know I am ready for new challenges — challenges that might include heeding the call of our General Superior in Rome, Father Nicolas, who has asked Jesuits around the world to focus on care for the poor, the marginalized, the uneducated and immigrants. Right now, I remain open to how God is calling me to serve others in ways, yet to be discerned.”

Father Biondi is one of the longest serving presidents at an American Jesuit college or university. His work led to a modernization of the SLU campus and revitalization of the surrounding city neighborhood. During his tenure, he focused on increasing the University’s academic standards and achievements and developing the it as a major research center.

Saint Louis University is a Catholic, Jesuit institution founded in 1818. The University has nearly 14,000 students on two campuses in St. Louis and Madrid, Spain.

Also Saturday morning, the Board of Trustees elected J. Joe Adorjan to serve as chairman of the SLU Board. He succeeds Thomas H. Brouster, Sr., who in April announced his plans to step down as chairman.
