ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – The Food and Drug Administration is proposing new rules for companies that make dog and cat food. The new rules would also apply to animal feed for livestock.

Officials want animal food companies to use the same methods that keep human food safe, like better sanitation. The goal is to protect the foods from bacteria, chemicals and other contaminants.

The proposal comes amid reports that more than 3,600 dogs and 10 cats have gotten sick after eating jerky pet treats over the past six years.
