EDWARDSVILLE, IL (KTVI) - A student says she was attacked on campus Thursday night. She said it happened at around 8pm as she walked on the bike path between the science building and the fitness center.

SIUE police say the female reported being beat up a bit, but was able to fight off her attacker, and run from the scene. Police do not believe the victim was a premeditated target. They are calling this a random act of violence.

The victim couldn't provide police with much of description. She described him as being around 6 feet tall, dark skinned, and she reports he had a large earring in his right ear. He was wearing a hooded sweat shirt.

The SIUE Police Department has extra patrols on the bike paths. They urge the community to take extra precautions. Travel in groups of two or more when possible and encourage students to download the free app "Rave Guardian" to their smart phones.

The SIUE Police Department continues to investigate this crime. They ask that anyone with information contact the SIUE Police Department at (618) 650-3324.
