JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KTVI) – The Ferguson Police Department is one of 17 municipal law enforcement agencies across the state that failed to submit its annual racial disparity data to the Missouri Attorney General’s office.
According to state AG Chris Koster, Missouri law requires all state, county, and municipal law enforcement groups to report specific statistics—which includes a driver’s race—for every vehicle stop they make. Each year, all the data must be submitted to the attorney general by March 1, who then must report it to the governor by June 1.
Koster said his office sent four separate written notices (Oct. 15, 2014; Dec. 17, 2014; Jan. 28, 2015; and Feb. 11, 2015) and called every law enforcement agency that had not yet submitted their data on-time.
The other municipal police departments failing to provide their respective vehicle stop data include: Bates City, Camden, Camden Point, Claycomo, Crystal Lakes, Deepwater, Edina, Edgerton, Hurley, Jennings, Lilbournm, Morley, New Melle, and Wellston.
Under Missouri law, the governor can withhold any state funds appropriated to these agencies until they turn the data in.
