FERGUSON, MO (KTVI) – In a unanimous vote Ferguson’s city council has voted to reject the first draft of a consent decree from the U.S. Department of Justice. City officials have instead asked the DOJ for additional three weeks to draft a counter proposal.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that city leaders declined to say what specifically was unacceptable to the city in the decree. But Councilman Brian Fletcher stated that the city felt what was being asked for could financially break the city.
Another councilman speaking to the Post Dispatch, cautioned against reading too much into the rejection as this is part of a back and forth negotiation between the city and the DOJ.
One sticking point was the cost of a federal monitor, who would oversee any agreement between the city and the DOJ, which could cost around $1 million dollars.
