FERGUSON, MO (KTVI) – In the midst of turmoil, turning to a good book can be a welcome oasis.

'It was five figures yesterday and I think it slipped into six figures today,' says Scott Bonner, the Ferguson Public Library Director.  'I need to look and see and it's from about seven thousand people.'

'That's exciting,' says Patrick Clark.

'Yeah, isn't it though,' says Bonner.

Fans of page turners are turning to pay pal and pledging their support. Hard times are resulting in hard cover books being donated and a lot of dollars.

'Totally grass roots as far as anyone can tell,' says Bonner.  'I don't know of anyone organizing anything.  It's just swelled up from the internet, mostly from Twitter of people coming to our web page and donating through pay pal.'

In August New Mexico children's librarian Angie Manfredi put together a list of books promoting unity and anonymous donors bought the books for the library.

'We see everything from about two dollars to 50 dollars and a few people have given one thousand dollars the ones who can afford that,' says Bonner.  'It's been phenomenal and glorious and it's going to open up a whole lot of options for us to serve the people of Ferguson.'

Scholastic has donated boxes of books and the Ferguson library plans to use the money to put together a comprehensive after school program for the entire family.

And while snow fell on the eve of thanksgiving it's a ground swell of support for one of the most important buildings in the midst of the Ferguson story.

'Yeah I have hope because I've seen it,' says Bonner.  'We've seen it multiple times now.'

Library Director Scott Bonner says his library will continue to offer education, cultural literacy and serve as a community center to continue the Ferguson conversation, just in a hushed tone when you're inside the library.
