UNIVERSITY CITY, MO (KTVI)- An early morning fire has damaged part of a home in University City. The fire started at a home located on Appleton south of Page, near 82nd Boulevard. Crews rushed to the scene when they got the call just after 3:30a.m., fearing they might have a rescue on their hands. There were initial reports that a 12-year-old child might have been inside the burning home.

Fortunately, that was not the case.

Authorities say the home is not vacant but no one was home at the time. Investigators say a passerby saw flames coming from the back of the home and called for help. Crews from five different departments responded to the scene. When they arrived, they found heavy fire coming from the back of the home.

Fire officials say the home is not a total loss but did sustain heavy damage.

The cause is still under investigation.
