DUPO, IL (KTVI) – Dupo fire crews spent hours in the sun on Wednesday fighting a fire on a day when the temperature nearly hit 100 degrees.

The fire started just before noon and volunteer fire fighters from Dupo and surrounding departments showed up to a burning apartment building at the 400 block of Lindmen to battle a 3-alarm blaze. Residents say dealing with heat and losses is a lot especially when it’s on one the hottest days of the year. Firefighters also had their own challenges; the heat was so intense it was draining on the crews. Firefighter’s set-up rehab tents on the scene to help them deal with the heat.  Officials say fire crews kept lots of water and Gatorade on hand for both the crew and victims. The Red Cross was also on the scene to help the 5 families get through the process and find a place to stay for the next few days. The Illinois State Fire Marshall was called in to determine a cause. All of the victims and pets made it out ok.
