Firefighters rescue 4 boa constrictors from fire

ALTON, Ill. (AP) _ Firefighters have rescued four boa constrictors from a Southern Illinois house fire.

The (Alton) Telegraph reports ( ) the owner of the Alton home where the fire occurred wasn’t there when the blaze broke out Wednesday morning. No people were injured.

Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold says after extinguishing the fire, crews found five snakes in cages in the home’s basement.

They were able to rescue four snakes, including one that was nearly 6 feet long. Sebold says a fifth boa constrictor apparently drowned after a water line melted and flooded its aquarium.

Dawn Korte is the homeowner’s girlfriend. She says the couple has been collecting the snakes for a long time.

She says: “They all have different personalities and they are probably not liking this one bit.”
