CHESTERFIELD, MO (KTVI)- Shoppers may have noticed several big name stores closing in Chesterfield Mall. We talked with the economic director for the city of Chesterfield to find out what was going on with the mall and what its future looks like.
Libbey Tucker tells Fox 2's Mandy Murphey the consumer shopping pie is much bigger now so consumers are spreading their dollars further and wider. Competition in Chesterfield has had an impact on the mall. Tucker says when the outlet malls opened, sales at the mall went up. Now sales have leveled off.
Tucker says the city isn't allowed to release sales for individual malls or retail locations, but she suspects sales may be down because of the recent store closings.
Tucker says the mall is trying to reinvent itself because of internet sales and surrounding outlet malls. It is focusing on becoming a dining and entertainment center. It is focusing on its successful destination tenants like American Girl, Cheesecake Factory, and the soon to open restaurant Twin Peaks.
A spokesperson for the International Council On Shopping Centers says Chesterfield Mall and other malls across the country are now turning into entertainment centers. They are trying to create a unique experience for the consumer.
