ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI) – A charity based out of St. Charles, Missouri, is changing the cycle of hunger and illiteracy in a village in Honduras and Fox 2 traveled with them to see it first hand.

"Just Because We Care" clothes, feeds and educates children who live on the mountain outside San Pedro Sula in the northwest part of Honduras.  It is listed as one of the world’s most violent cities because of drug trafficking.

Mandy and photojournalist Dave Sharp stayed on the mountain for four days. It’s a place where families are fortunate if they eat one meal a day. A place where a TV set is a luxury and also where St. Louisans are making a significant improvement in many lives.

"Just Because" started 11 years ago when Diana Wamhoff visited Honduras on a mission trip.  She stumbled upon an elementary school where they needed a kitchen.

The school was told if they could build a kitchen, the government would provide food.  Diane built the kitchen, but the government didn't provide the food.

She and her husband Bob decided they would somehow provide one meal a day so the families would send their children to school.

Bob and Diane formed "Just Because We Care".  Their organization has built homes on the mountain, a school, soccer field, community center, provided books, and computers.

Their main goal is to feed the children.  They travel to the mountain several times a year.  This trip's goal was to distribute clothing donated by St. Louisans to the children at the elementary school.

While touring the government hospital, we learned 30 babies a day are born there.

Many of the mothers are teenagers.  Doctors explained that it’s very common for young women who live in the countryside to have babies at an early age.

Many of the sick children in the hospital have severe diarrhea because the water is unclean.

We also toured a nutrition center where dozens of children go each day to get food.  These are the children who live outside of the mountain area and don’t have any assistance of any kind.

The children are often dying of malnutrition because their families can't even afford beans and rice. The nutrition center teaches these women how to care for the babies and cook with the food that is available to them.

Just Because We Care will be hosting a 1-mile (Fun Walk/Run), 5K Run & 10K Run on March 29. If you would like to participate in the event you can run, walk or be a sponsor.
