ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- The scaffolding might have skedaddled from inside the Fabulous Fox Theatre, but Richard Baker knows it was no small feat of engineering.
"This won't hold the weight of the scaffolding, so what they actually had to do was span this with steel girders so that the scaffolding points that were over this were supported by both the stage and the floor," says Richard Baker the president of the Fabulous Fox Theatre.
While the ceiling is taking center stage with the recent renovation, Baker knows numbers had to be crunched to get the 260 tons of scaffolding inside in the first place.
"A lot of people don't understand that the floor of the theatre, even though it's very heavy concrete, underneath is an air plane, basically an air space," says Baker. "So we had to make sure that floor would support it."
Monday, you'd never guess that scaffolding rising 100 feet in the air had filled this auditorium.
If you can find it, the secret 66 is a little easier to see.
That's thanks to 55 days, 200 gallons of paint and a lot of polishing to uncover the numbers of the 20th century.
"We really wanted to be true to the original and everything we've done here is that way," says Baker. "The ceiling you'll see the patterns are somewhat subdued, but that's the way it looked back in the 20s, and we really wanted to bring that back."
There are still LED lights to be installed, but already the Czechoslovakian crystal jewels shine a little brighter than before.
In fact, through September if you guess the number of jewels around the perimeter of the outer circle of tassels you can win season tickets to the Fox.
"Those little tassels that from the floor looked little, as you know because you were up there they're huge," says Baker. "They're three foot tall and a foot and a half diameter and it's just amazing the detail, the detail that they were able to do back in the 20s."
They might have been bigger back then, but you can see them better right now.
