ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)- Overnight sleet and freezing rain kept road crews busy and led to numerous crashes on both sides of the river. All of that meant a long commute for rush hour drivers. Some people were stuck in traffic for more than two hours.
Countless cars slid on icy roads and crashed into guardrails, medians or in some cases cars slid off roadways into ditches.
Big rig crashes on road and highways including I-64 and I-44 also caused massive jams. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries.
Both MoDOT and IDOT had crews treating roadways since the early morning overnight hours.
MoDOT had more than 200 trucks on the roads. IDOT says it had 110 trucks out starting around 1:00am. An IDOT spokesperson says in Randolph, Washington, and southern Monroe counties crews actually had to do some plowing in addition to laying down salt.
