SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) _ Mike Frerichs (FRAYR’-ikz) says he won the race for Illinois state treasurer by about 9,600 votes.

The Democratic state senator from Champaign met with reporters Wednesday just hours after Republican Tom Cross conceded the neck-and-neck contest about two weeks after Election Day.

Frerichs says he had a gracious concession call from Cross and will meet with the former House minority leader from Oswego to discuss policy.

Frerichs benefited from late-arriving mail-in and provisional ballots in a race that earlier this week was separated by fewer than 40 votes out of 3.5 million cast. The Illinois State Board of Elections meets to certify election results on Nov. 30.

Frerichs named co-chairmen for his transition team. They are Michael Carrigan, president of the Illinois AFL-CIO and Democratic U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly.
