ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – Many are calling a St. Louis mother a hero, after she died outside a south St. Louis Walgreens, while trying to save her daughter’s life.

Thirty-three year-old Colleen Segbers loved her 10 year-old daughter, Gwen, more than anyone in the world.  According to Colleen’s mother, just two weeks ago, Colleen said she’d never be able to live without Gwen, her only child.

When an SUV jumped the curb outside Walgreens Monday night, barreling towards the 10 year-old girl, a mother’s instincts set in.  Witnesses say Colleen pushed her daughter out of the way, sacrificing her own life instead.  Police say the driver accidentally hit the gas pedal.  The 10 year-old suffered no physical injuries.

Colleen’s mother says it’s the bravest thing her daughter had ever done.  Friends and coworkers are also shocked and devastated by Colleen’s death.  Friends say she’d do anything for anyone, and loved animals, especially the two Chihuahuas she rescued.

Colleen was also active, involved in roller derby and a softball team.  Teammates say she always seemed happy.

She worked part-time as a waitress at Rooster in downtown St. Louis, where she was well-liked by many. Some had worked with her just a day before her death.  And just last month, the 33 year-old began substitute teaching at a charter school, Confluence Academy. Her mother says it was Colleen’s lifelong dream to be a teacher: a dream she was finally working to achieve, before her life was tragically cut short.
