COLLINSVILLE, IL (KTVI) – It is homecoming night for the Collinsville Kahoks, but the usual good spirits are subdued this year after freshman Tray Turner died from injuries he suffered in a fall over a banister inside the high school.

Turner, 14, was heading to lunch on Tuesday when something happened and he fell from the second floor stairs to the first floor. A police investigation shows it was nothing but a tragic accident.

Adults in the community are working to raise funds for the school district's charity, KAHOKstrong, which has been helping the Turner family this week.

Collinsville native and high school graduate Mike Ogle donated helium from his shop, Cullop Jennings Florist, to fill balloons for a balloon launch during the football game Friday night.

"I've been seeing a lot of support from the community, from different companies here, trying to help out," said Ogle, who has two sons of his own, one of whom is a sophomore at the high school. "It really hits you; hits your heart.”

A friend and fellow high school graduate, Todd Duke, runs a high school sports Internet service,

"I was really amazed at the outpouring after Tray was hospitalized; my Facebook page just blew up with all kinds of comments, prayers, and thoughts for the family,” Duke said.

Both men said the community is coming together, but they regret it is happening under such sad circumstances. The school district canceled the traditional parade Thursday afternoon and a Friday morning pep rally appearance on Fox 2 News. Tray was to be remembered at the football game Friday night.

Visitation services will take place Sunday, September 25 at 4 p.m. at the Irwin Chapel. The funeral will be held Monday at 10 a.m., with the burial to follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates.
