SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (FOX NEWS) – Gabrielle Giffords and her retired astronaut husband Mark Kelly were in upstate New York on Sunday to push for background checks on firearms. After hearing about the ins-and-outs of the unique background checks already in place at the gun show former congresswoman Giffords, spoke briefly, issuing a plea to lawmakers on Capitol Hill to come together to stop gun violence. Part of the couple’s campaign with “Americans For Responsible Solutions” is to make the case for stronger background checks, nationwide.

A background check is done on virtually every firearm sold at gun shows in New York state. No buyer is allowed to leave without proving that check happened.

One dealer at Sunday’s show in Saratoga Springs says that while he cooperates fully with background checks he doubts the measure will stop someone who is hellbent on having a firearm.

“If he doesn’t get it from me, he’s gonna get it somewhere else and will continue to find until he gets somebody who will let him have a gun illegally.” Said gun shop owner Joe Aldano.
