ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – Seventh grade teacher Kevin Walters has sensors on his truck bed which beep when someone is in his blind spot.

They are an aid when he's on an interstate or city street.

And the guy that everyone relies on, is learning to accept the generosity of others.

'He really kind of makes you think in a different way,' says Isabella Jacobs.

'He`ll talk for like a long while and that`s because he wants us to understand it,' says Sully Anselmo.  'He wants us to succeed.'

Earlier this year Selvidge Middle School teacher from the Rockwood school district lost the sight in his left eye and later the eye to cancer.

Through the whole process he kept his students in formed of his ocular problems.

'So I wanted to be strong and use it as a teaching moment for kids on how to face adversity,' says Kevin Walters, World Geography Teacher.

The seventh graders took it upon themselves to raise more than $2,000 For his medical expenses and to help with the blind spot sensors.

'He`s shown a lot of strength and just joy through such a hard thing and we wanted to do something to share a little joy back,' says Jacobs.

'I feel that he deserves this because it would be a benefit for him and it`ll be safer on the roads for him having that,' says Ann Walters.

The Bommarito Automotive Group donated the manpower and installed the sensors for free.

And now the world geography teacher that has tried to reach his students through changing their perspectives is getting help refocusing his own.

'It`s so cool when you see kids take it upon themselves to do something for someone else without prompting,' says Michael Anselmo, Ed. D., Selvidge Middle School Principal.  'This was truly a family that said they want to help out a teacher and from there it just kind of grew.'
