Girl, 14, dies with dogs in northwestern Indiana house fire

LAKE STATION, Ind. (AP) _ Authorities say a 14-year-old girl has died in a northwestern Indiana house fire.

Lake Station Fire Chief Chuck Fazekas says Layona Dragash was found dead Sunday morning in her in her bed on the second story with her two dogs, which also died.

He says firefighters were called to the home about 5:30 a.m. but could not immediately enter the structure because of the intensity of the fire. They also tried to enter through a second-floor window but were pushed back by the flames and smoke.

Fazekas says it took nearly an hour to get the fire under control. He says a preliminary report indicates the fire started from a lamp on the first floor of the home about 5 miles east of Gary.
