FRANKLIN COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 7-year-old Villa Ridge girl.

According to Sheriff Gary Toelke, the girl’s father came home from work around 7:10 a.m. Wednesday and found the child and his wife in the bedroom of their residence in the 200 block of Maple Lake Court. The child was dead and the man’s 31-year-old wife was said to be “incoherent.”

The mother was taken to St. Anthony’s  Hospital in St. Louis for evaluation.

The Franklin County Sheriff's office says the mother is a possible suspect in the murder investigation.  She made statements to police at the hospital that they say created, "a reasonable belief in her involvement."  Her name is being withheld because formal charges have not yet been filed.

The child died as a result of gunshot wounds.  The exact reason for the child's death is not known at this time.

Investigators will be meeting with the Franklin County Prosecutor this afternoon.  The mother currently remains hospitalized.
