ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-The Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri hold a Guinness World Record after 2012’s April Showers donation drive.  Now they are looking to break that record in 2013.

In 2012, they collected 1.4 million personal care items for Operation Food Search.

"Those things that we take for granted: toilet paper, toothpaste, shampoo,” explained executive director Sunny Schaefer. "So many people in the community are so generous. It just amounted to this record-breaking number last year."

"They are learning at a very young age to help others,” said Girl Scouts C.E.O Donna Martin. “They are taking leadership and responsibility to make our world a better place."

Martin said the campaign started with a lesson for the girls who are not used to being without life’s basic necessities.

"If you can imagine a child, a child who is going to school every day and perhaps being bullied because they aren't clean,” she said.  “They don't smell so good.  Maybe their teeth aren't clean because they don't have toothpaste and a toothbrush.  It means a great deal to them.”

The young ladies say that that lesson was really harsh, but it drove their record-breaking success last year.

"I thought everybody had stuff that we had.  But, people didn't,” said 8-year-old Girl Scout Raven Addison.  "We had to work hard, and share, and get all kinds of stuff and work as a team.”

With the help of heavy-hitting partners like Wal-Mart and Schnucks, the ladies actually hope to leave their record behind.

"And we hope that we can break it again this year,” Martin laughed.

The Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri will kick of the April Showers 2013 drive by leaving bags on doors throughout the area April 12-14, 2013.  Scouts will return April 20 to pick up the bags filled with brand-new and unopened personal care items.
