(KTVI) – Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on Friday in honor of a fallen firefighter. Firefighter Charles Bates was killed in a car wreck last Wednesday.

He was a 21-year veteran of the St. Louis City Fire Department assigned to Truck Company 22.

Bates died in a rollover accident at Forest Park Parkway and North Skinker Boulevard during evening rush hour.

His colleagues say they’ll remember his humor, compassion and dedication to his career.
