(KTVI) - Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has vetoed a bill that would have banned mandatory insurance coverage of contraception and abortion.  He called the legislation unnecessary.

He referred to a 2011 state law that allows insurers to offer policies without contraception coverage to people or employers who say it violates their moral or religious beliefs.  The governor believes the new bill could have let insurance companies deny contraception coverage to people who desired it.

The Archdiocese of St. Louis disagrees with the governor and is encouraging the legislature to over ride his veto in September.
