EDWARDSVILLE, IL (KTVI) – It took a Madison County jury less than three hours to return with a conviction against a Granite City man accused of beating a 20-month-old to death.
According to the Madison County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, 42-year-old John Holmon III was convicted of first-degree murder in the September 2012 beating death of Jaesean Rusher.
Granite City police were called to Holmon’s home on September 10 by the boy’s grandmother. Holmon was dating the child’s mother, who’d left for school earlier in the day and left Jaesean in Holmon’s care.
An autopsy revealed Jaesean had suffered more than 50 injuries and that he died as a result of a closed head injury.
The typical penalty range for a murder conviction is 20 to 60 years. But due to Jaesean’s age at the time of his murder, Holmon is eligible for extended prison time. Regardless, Holmon will have to serve 100 percent of his sentence.
