JOPLIN, Mo. – A local group is trying to save a Girl Scouts camp near Joplin following the recent announcement that the property will be closed and sold.
The Springfield News-Leader reports that Friends of Camp Mintahama has submitted a proposal to contract with Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland to take over management of the property.
Friends of Camp Mintahama Chair Lisa Nelson expects to receive a response from the Girl Scouts board soon. She says the next closest Girl Scout camp if Mintahama is sold would be Finbrooke Camp near Rogersville.
Nelson says there’s been a consolidation of camp properties over the ast decade.
The GSMH council also announced plans to sell the Cherokee Ridge camp in Wayne County and the Sacajawea Program Center in Pettis County. The properties will be closed Dec. 16.
