Hit and run victim expected to survive; search for driver continues

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – St. Louis County authorities are searching for the driver who struck a disabled man on a motorized scooter while he was trying to cross the street overnight Friday.

The accident happened around 12:45 a.m. near the intersection of Halls Ferry and Chambers Road.

Investigators said 67-year-old Fred Bonnet was riding a motorized wheelchair or scooter in the roadway when he was hit by a car which then immediately sped off. Citizens in the area took it upon themselves to protect the man as he lay in the street until first responders arrived.

Bonnet’s family and friends said he’s recovering at a local hospital and has lost a leg as a result of the accident, but will pull through.

Police are hoping the driver responsible for the accident will come forward.

The hit and run vehicle is described as a black Chevy Impala with front end damage. The license plate is unknown.
