COLLINSVILLE, IL (KTVI) – The community of Collinsville remembered freshman Tray Turner at its homecoming football game.

Turner died Thursday after falling from the stairs on his way to lunch Tuesday.

All week long the school has been using the hashtag #PrayForTray, but the Collinsville football team has changed that to #PlayForTray ahead of the game.

"Not only are we celebrating the Kahoks, and that is why everyone is assembling, but we are celebrating Tray at the same time," said Tom Seib, Tray’s grandfather.

Memories of Tray filled the field; but instead of sadness, the atmosphere was about support.

"There is a spirit here tonight, and oh there is a football game as well," said Toni Geisen, a Kahoks Strong sponsor. "There are a lot of events and things happening where people can participate and feel like they are helping this family as well."

The school district’s charity, Kahok Strong, is raising funds for Tray’s family.

"There are not enough thank yous in the world that we can use to express our appreciation for everything that the community has done that the people who love Tray have done," Seib said.

It wasn’t just Collinsville, either; rival Granite City raised $1,300 to bring to game for Tray’s family.

"There have been many tears today not only because of the sadness of the occasion but because of the love that has been shown," Seib said. "When you hear what people have done without being ask they just did it, when you hear that you can’t help but shed a few tears."

The visitation for Tray will be Sunday night at Irwin Chapel in Glen Carbon. The funeral will be held Monday morning.
