House Democrats arrested at immigration rally in DC

WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Charlie Rangel was one of the first to be arrested by U.S. Capitol Police along with Representatives John Lewis, Luis Gutierrez, and Keith Ellison. Their goal is to get Congress to act now on immigration reform. hey want a clear path to citizenship for the nation’s 12 million undocumented immigrants.

Now, I’m sure some of you are thinking? How can congress pass any immigration reform when they can’t even pass a budget. But, these protesters say the shutdown will not slow them down. This rally been planned for a long timeand these arrests were very carefully orchestrated.

Before the march to Capitol Hill and the subsequent arrests there was a huge rally on the National Mall called the Camino Americano,or American Road. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi spoke on the stage along with several other representatives?. even in the middle of the shutdown.

In fact, the shutdown almost kept this event from happening. Organizers had to apply for a first amendment right to protest permit with US Park Police and at the last minute they got it.
