VENICE, IL (KTVI)- A house exploded in the metro east overnight, rocking a neighborhood. The incident happened around 10:30p.m. Thursday at a home on Washington Street near Sixth. Fire crews from multiple departments responded. They quickly rushed into action as flames shot through the roof of the home.

Officials say no one was hurt because they say no one was home at the time of the explosion.

Residents in the home, a grandmother and at least three grandchildren, left the home Wednesday to go camping.

But this is no doubt devastating to the family, who neighbors say has lived in this home for nearly 30 years. One neighbor said they thought they smelled gas in the area over the past few days.

That information has not been confirmed by fire officials.

Authorities are still trying to determine the cause of the fire. The Venice Fire Department is leading the investigation.
