MADISON, Ill. – Gunfire erupts on a quiet day in a community just east of downtown St. Louis, prompting the activation of the Major Case Squad.
One man was killed Monday in a shooting at 4th Street and Highland Avenue in Madison, Illinois.
The shooting happened around 11:45 a.m and the 35-year-old victim was pronounced dead at a local hospital. He was later identified as Gerald Wiley.
Police found an SUV had crashed into a tree with bullet holes through the windshield. A female passenger was injured in the crash, according to police. She remained hospitalized Monday night and was expected to survive.
About 20 detectives are working the case. They were busy hitting the streets and collecting evidence as of Monday afternoon.
The Major Case Squad is looking for multiple suspects but has not released descriptions. Investigators are also not yet saying whether those suspects are believed to be in a vehicle or on foot.
