TROY, Ill. – An investigation is underway after a suspected domestic situation ended with one woman dead and a home destroyed by a fire.

The Madison County Coroner has identified Susanne E. Tomlinson, 69, as the victim who died in the fire.

The fire happened around 2:30 p.m Thursday in the 500 block of Wood Thrush Street. After crews battled the fire for several hours, Tomlinson was found deceased inside of the home. The Troy Fire Chief tells FOX 2 at least two people were pulled from the burning home Thursday.

“This was a unique situation that was unexpected,” said Fire Chief Kevin Manso. “We dealt with this the best we could, we are still working on it.”

While first responders in the Metro East responded to the scene, officers from the Troy Police Department were informed of a domestic disturbance in the area. The preliminary investigation led police to the victims’ address and the discovery of an active fire within the home.

“Small-type community, you never think something like this would happen. It’s real unfortunate,” says one neighbor speaking on anonymity.

An autopsy is pending to determine the cause and manner of death. Prosecutors have not yet filed any criminal charges in connection with the investigation, and investigators have not yet disclosed a motive.

The Troy Police Department, Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office, Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit, and the Madison County Coroner’s Office are among the agencies assisting with the investigation.
